Yes, from now on, when anyone has the guts to tell you that you put on some weight since the last time you both met, you can now tell him/her that it could be the fireworks’ fault and not yours!

A study by 4 Maltese experts, entitled “Perchlorate in dust fall and indoor dust in Malta: An effect of fireworks.” published last year concludes that Perchlorate is found in Malta. The study states that “Perchlorate levels in dust fall escalate during the summer in response to numerous religious feasts celebrated with fireworks and perchlorate persists at low concentrations for several months beyond the summer festive period”

The study continues to state that “in Malta, perchlorate derives exclusively from KClO4, imported for fireworks manufacture. Its residue in dust presents an exposure risk to the population, especially via ingestion by hand to mouth transfer”

So thanks to this study we can conclude that Perchlorate is present in relatively higher concentrations in Malta.

Thanks to another study we can continue to connect the dots between your chance of getting fatter and this substance called Perchlorate which is the result of fireworks. The study entitled “Perchlorate and the thyroid gland” published back in 1998 by Dr. J. Wolff of the National Institutes of Health USA, states that Perchlorate itself hinders the thyroid gland from working properly.

In large amounts perchlorate interferes with iodine uptake into the thyroid gland. In adults, the thyroid gland helps regulate the metabolism by releasing hormones, while in children, the thyroid helps in proper development

Irregular throid gland functioning is known to make you fatter.
