Temperatures in Portugal are rising drastically, due to the African Anticyclone, forests are burning spontaneously, more than 1,000 firefighters are battling to control the blazes which have claimed the lives of at least 64 people in Portugal.

All this is happening as a system of high pressure that originated in North Africa is affecting the Western Mediterranean as shown in the map below, which depicts the expected temperatures later this week.


It is clear that the most affected countries are Portugal and Spain, however France and Northern Italy are also at risk.

It seems that at least the heart of the African anticyclone will not be directly over the Maltese islands, nevertheless temperatures will still rise during the coming days, the highest are expected to reach 31C later this week, which will feel more like 35C fom humans.
